Not everything that goes wrong in your life is spiritual warfare. Sometimes you are late because you left late. Sometimes the phone battery died because it has been sitting on three percent since breakfast while you were courageously believing it would survive until evening. And sometimes the person who disagrees with you is not an enemy assigned to your destiny. They simply disagree with you.
But the fact that we should not blame the devil for everything does not mean Scripture teaches us to ignore spiritual conflict. The Bible is remarkably balanced. It does not teach paranoia, but neither does it teach spiritual naivety. Paul writes:
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” — Ephesians 6:10 KJV
Then he says:
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:11 KJV
Notice where spiritual warfare begins. Not with the devil. With the Lord.
“Be Strong In The Lord”
That phrase deserves more attention than we sometimes give it. Paul does not say, “Become a strong person.” He says: “Be strong in the Lord.” That is very different. Spiritual strength is not developing a personality so aggressive that darkness becomes nervous when you enter the room. Neither is authority measured by how dramatically we speak about demons.
Our strength is located in Someone else. “In the Lord, and in the power of his might.” Yesterday we learned that our position is in Christ. Today Paul shows us that our strength for spiritual resistance is also in the Lord. The Christian life is Christ-dependent from beginning to end. We stand because He is strong.
The Enemy Has Wiles
Paul tells believers to stand against:
“…the wiles of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:11 KJV
The word wiles points us toward schemes, strategies and deception. That is important because spiritual warfare is not always spectacular. Sometimes it is subtle. A lie believed repeatedly can do enormous damage. A small offence nursed for months can become bitterness. Fear tolerated long enough can begin controlling decisions. Condemnation can slowly make someone withdraw from prayer. Division can enter through misunderstandings nobody was humble enough to resolve.
The enemy does not need everything to look dramatic if deception is working quietly. This is why spiritual warfare requires truth and discernment, not fascination.
People Are Not The Enemy
Paul immediately gives us another safeguard:
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood…” — Ephesians 6:12 KJV
That verse should change the way we handle conflict. Your colleague is flesh and blood. Your relative is flesh and blood. The person who irritated you at church is definitely flesh and blood, even if your emotions briefly suggest otherwise. People can behave wrongly. We may need boundaries, correction, difficult conversations or justice. But Paul refuses to let believers reduce spiritual conflict to fighting human beings.
This is especially important in prayer. We do not turn prayer into a weapon against people. We bless. We intercede. We forgive. We seek wisdom. We resist evil without becoming evil toward the people involved. A woman clothed in God’s armour should become harder for darkness to manipulate, not harder for everybody around her to live with.
Put On The Whole Armour
Paul says:
“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God…” — Ephesians 6:13 KJV
Not the armour we designed. The armour of God. And not our favourite part. The whole armour. That matters because we can become fascinated with one dimension of spiritual warfare while neglecting the ordinary biblical realities Paul actually names. Truth. Righteousness. The preparation of the gospel of peace. Faith. Salvation. The Word of God. Prayer. This armour is profoundly Christ-centred and truth-centred. It is difficult to read Ephesians 6 carefully and conclude that spiritual warfare is mainly about spending our lives looking for demons.
Paul spends far more time telling us what to put on than telling us what to look for.
The Belt Of Truth
Paul begins:
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth…” — Ephesians 6:14 KJV
The battle often concerns truth. What has God said? What are you believing? What lies have gained access to your thinking? You cannot consistently live victoriously while building your inner world around deception. This includes lies about God, lies about yourself, lies about other people and lies about circumstances. Truth holds things together. This is why Scripture has been so central throughout Prayer Awakening. A woman grounded in truth is much harder to manipulate through fear, condemnation or confusion.
The Breastplate Of Righteousness
Paul continues: “…and having on the breastplate of righteousness.” We stand in the righteousness we have through Christ, and that grace also calls us into righteous living. This is important. You cannot separate spiritual warfare from character. We sometimes want authority without obedience, but Scripture refuses that separation. There is nothing particularly powerful about rebuking darkness loudly while quietly making peace with what God has told us to leave.
Righteousness matters. Integrity matters. Obedience matters. The armour is not a costume we put over an unchanged life.
Feet Prepared With The Gospel Of Peace
Then:
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” — Ephesians 6:15 KJV
I love that peace appears in a passage about warfare. God’s warrior is carrying the gospel of peace. That alone should correct some of our ideas about spiritual authority. We are not being trained to become permanently angry Christians. We carry good news. The gospel announces reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ. Even while standing against darkness, the Church carries a message of peace.
The Shield Of Faith
Paul says:
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” — Ephesians 6:16 KJV
Notice that fiery darts come. Faith does not mean nothing is ever fired at you. Faith means what is fired does not have to determine what you believe. Fear may suggest an outcome. Condemnation may accuse. Circumstances may look intimidating. But faith raises what God has spoken between the heart and the lie. This is not denial. It is confidence in God. A fiery dart does not become truth merely because it arrived with intensity.
The Helmet Of Salvation
“And take the helmet of salvation…” — Ephesians 6:17 KJV
The mind matters. What occupies your thoughts eventually influences how you respond. Salvation gives us a new foundation for understanding who we are and where our hope lies. When condemnation attacks, remember salvation. When the past attempts to rename you, remember salvation. When fear speaks as though your future belongs entirely to circumstances, remember whose you are.
The mind needs protection through gospel truth.
The Sword Of The Spirit
Paul continues:
“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” — Ephesians 6:17 KJV
Notice again the relationship between the Spirit and the Word. The sword is “of the Spirit,” and it is “the word of God.” Spirit-led warfare is Word-shaped warfare. Jesus demonstrated this during temptation: “It is written.” The Word exposes lies. It establishes truth. It gives language to faith. But a Bible sitting unopened beside the bed is not being wielded simply because you own one.
The Word must enter us. We read it. Know it. Believe it. Obey it. And when lies come, truth has something to say.
And Then Paul Says, “Praying Always”
The armour passage does not finish with the sword. Paul continues:
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance…” — Ephesians 6:18 KJV
Prayer surrounds the entire life of spiritual resistance. We put on truth prayerfully. We stand in righteousness prayerfully. We exercise faith prayerfully. We handle Scripture prayerfully. We remain watchful prayerfully. The woman who stands is not self-sufficient. She remains dependent upon God.
The Repeated Command Is “Stand”
Something else is striking in this passage. Paul repeatedly uses the language of standing.
“…that ye may be able to stand…” — verse 11
“…and having done all, to stand.” — verse 13
“Stand therefore…” — verse 14
Sometimes spiritual warfare is not advancing dramatically into something new. Sometimes victory looks like refusing to move from what God has already established. You keep believing truth. You keep walking in righteousness. You keep trusting Christ. You keep praying. You keep obeying. You keep standing. There are seasons when the most powerful testimony is simply: I am still here, and I still believe God.
Put It On And Stand
Today, do not spend prayer searching nervously for what the enemy might be doing. Begin with God. “Be strong in the Lord.” Ask whether there is a lie you have believed. Bring your conduct before God. Examine whether fear has been speaking louder than faith. Fill your mind with the truth of salvation. Take Scripture seriously. Pray in the Spirit. And stand. Yesterday we discovered our position in Christ. Today we learn how to stand from that position.
Not paranoid. Not arrogant. Not obsessed with darkness. But clothed in what God has provided. The enemy may have schemes, but God has not left His people defenceless. So put on the whole armour of God. And having done all: Stand.
